Give ‘Em The Boot: The Abington Guide Boots

I recently invested a decent sum of money into some new waterproof boots and wanted to share my review of them. The boots were the Abington Guide Boots, which retail for around $160-200.

First things first: You may not have heard of Abington; well the truth is that these boots are made by Timberland. Abington was their original brand back when they made workboots, so they brought back the Abington brand to market these retro boots, along with a handful of other styles. The Guide Boots have a leather upper and lining, stitched moc toe, padded gusseted tongue and collar, and a welted sole that is oil-resistant. These are some tough boots.

The reason I bought the Abington Guide Boots was because of their versatility. I wanted some solid, high-quality leather boots that would keep my feet dry and comfortable in the rain and snow, but I also wanted something that I could wear year-round with jeans without looking like a lumberjack.

I was between the Abingtons and a pair of classic Doc Martens, but the Abingtons were more comfortable, more waterproof, and overall more stylish. Pull some jeans down over the Abington Guide Boots and they could be mistake for fashionable leather sneakers; they are a very dynamic pair of boots. They have a sleek, muted all-black look that could even be passable in a semi-formal outfit.

So if you’re looking for a sturdy, waterproof boot that you can wear year-round without looking like you’re about to enlist in the Marines, the Abington Guide Boots are a good choice. The biggest downside is the high price, but if you take good care of them, this will be a classic pair of boots that will last you for several years. I recommend the Abington Guide Boots.

Finding The Finest Fleece

Now that Spring is coming up and I can finally put away the winter coat, I need a light jacket for the Spring time and I’m looking to buy a new fleece. I figured many of you might be in the same boat, so I did a comparison of some of the top fleece jackets on the market.  I went shopping and tried out some of the most popular fleece jackets in the stores and here are the results. Please note that I wanted a fleece for practical reasons; to keep me warm and comfortable around town, and when I go hiking and camping. Therefore looks and fashion were given a low priority here, I was looking for functionality and comfort.

The Competitors: I tried out many popular men’s fleece jackets by brands including The North Face, Columbia, Patagonia, Mountain Hardware, Ortovox, and Arc’Teryx. The jackets I tried all varied from about $50 to about $250 in price.

The Best of the Best: The Patagonia R2 (pictured above) was the overall best fleece I could find. It’s very warm and comfortable, but at the same time very lightweight. You could stuff it in a backpack and not feel a difference in the weight. It’s very durable material and has a very clever design. It was the best fleece I could find, but it also carried a premium price tag: The R2 retails for around $180, which is more than I was looking to spend on a fleece jacket.

My Choice: I ended up going for the North Face Khumbu fleece jacket (above). The Khumbu is a no-nonsense fleece: it has a minimal amount of pockets and gadgets, it’s just a thick, comfortable warm fleece. I chose the Khumbu over the Patagonia R2 because of the pricetag: The Khumbu retails for $80. Although I I liked the R2 a bit more, the Khumbu was less than half the price.

Conclusion: I compared 12 different fleece jackets, and I found that overall the Patagonia R2 was the best. However, taking price into consideration, the Khumbu was the best deal, it’s comparable in quality to the R2, but it comes at a very affordable price.
